HarperCollins nous sort une énième version des Hauts de Hurle-vents d’Emilie Bronte.
La particularité de la couverture plutôt réussie est le macaron en haut à droite qui dit “Bella & Edward’s Favorite Book”
A moins de vivre au fin fond du désert, vous avez forcément entendu parler de Twilight, la série de Stephenie Meyer, qui raconte l’amour impossible entre un vampire et une ado.
Beaucoup d’amoureux transis, de “Oh mon dieu je l’aime”, de “Notre amour est impossible, je suis un vampire et toi une mortelle” et je passe les regards langoureux etc. etc. Bref de la bonne littérature pour adolescent (chacun son truc).
Dans Hésitation, le tome 3, Bella cite de nombreuses fois le roman et compare son amour avec Edward avec celui de Catherine et Heathcliff, les héros des Hauts de Hurle-Vents.
Une belle opération de com’ pour vendre ce classique aux ados : une couverture re-vampée “à la Twilight”, on nomme les héros et hop, l’affaire est dans le sac. On ne vas tout de même pas se plaindre que nos chères têtes blondes lisent des bons bouquins !
Mais attention jeunes gens, point de vampire chez Emily Bronte !

While I was browsing for new interesting and unusal stuff to show you I fell on that entry.
I’ve always loved books as objects and pieces of art and it always broke my heart when I found some of them torn apart in the bookshop I worked in. Probably because I couldn’t read them anymore. No need to say I’ve never cut them !
But Brian Dettmer carves them. He cuts them, pages by pages to make an original piece of art I would definitely have.

I am probably in a kind of “book-cover-design-mood” this week.
Here’s an article I’ve dug up from the depth of the excellent Smashing Magazine published last April on …. well… books covers !

Lance Carbuncle has written the most interesting road stories I’ve ever read. One of the weirdest too ! Many of the themes of the genre are here : the experience, the introspection, the meeting of people leading to a fondamental change of the characters…
The plot is really simple : a man (probably the author at the beginning) moves over to Florida and back to look for his beloved dog left behind, more of a soul mate if I might say.
The most interesting thing on that story is probably the real talent of the author on characters which made me think of Chuck Palahniuk at some point. The author leads us into the southern subcultured weirdos with the most hilarious manners.
I spent a great time reading this great book.
I’m not sure it will be easy to get as this book is self-published but if you can lay your hand on it, don’t miss the fun ! You’ll definitely be “Smashed, Squashed, Splattered, Chewed, Chunked and Spewed” with that reading.

I’ve been invited tonight to the opening of the Salon du Livre (National Book Convention) in Paris. Every year, all the french publishing houses (and many foreigners) are gathered to discuss the future of the book market and show their production. But you also have 5 days to meet your favourite authors and to make them sign your first editions (the website is a bit weird, good luck to find what you want !) ! Each year, a different country is honoured, it will be Israel for the 2008 edition. Sadly, when it was announced, many publishing houses decided not to come [fr](when politics leak on the books).
I’ll make a report ASAP !

J’ai mis la main sur une invitation pour la cérémonie d’ouverture du Salon du Livre (Porte de Versailles, Paris) ce soir. Tous les ans, les éditeurs français (et bien d’autres) se retrouvent pour parler de l’avenir de l’industrie du livre et faire découvrir leur domaine au public. Mais c’est aussi l’occasion durant 5 jours de rencontrer vos auteurs préférés et de faire signer vos premières éditions (Bon courage avec le site !). Cette année c’est Israel qui est mis à l’honneur. Malheureusement, à l’annonce du pays, de nombreuses maisons d’éditions se sont retirées pour protester contre ce choix (Quand la politique bave sur les livres !).
Retour dès que possible, ici même.

I am a bit late though, but yesterday one of my friend told me about the death of Gary Gygax.
I ‘ve never been a D&D fan until recently (many thanks Mat) but I’ve oddly felt an infinite sadness when I heard the news. So I want to thank mister Gygax for the incredible moments I had with my friends around our game table.
Dawn those saving throws and farewell Gary ! May the gods of the Forgotten Realms give the honours to their most faithful servant.

Je suis un peu en retard sur la news, mais hier un ami m’a appris la mort de Gary Gygax.
Je suis devenu un fan de Donjons et Dragons sur le tard (merci Mat) mais je fus envahi d’une tristesse infinie là l’annonce de la nouvelle.
Je voudrais donc prendre un petit moment pour remercier Mr Gygax pour les incroyables moments que j’ai passé avec mes amis autour de notre table de jeu.
Satanés jets de sauvegarde ! Bon voyage à vous Gary, que les dieux des Royaumes Oubliés accueillent avec les honneurs leur plus grand serviteur.

Today is the World Book Day ! So we definitely had to put a little post here !
It’s funny how people can’t agree on stuff. In fact, I thought that there would be some kind of agreement on the date of the world book day but apparently not.
So there’s a world book day today for the UK and Irish world and one for the rest, sponsored by the UNESCO in April.
The english version aims at gathering money to send packs of books to schools. It also echoes the ‘2008, National Year of Reading‘, promoting the reading through the Old Kingdom.
Better two than none !
So if you feel like knowing a bit more about the UK & Irish World book day (Sic) check the website.
Otherwise you can wait for the UNESCO World Book Day on April 23rd.
As for me it’s book day everyday so….

Aujourd’hui, c’est la journée mondiale du livre. Un petit post n’était donc pas de trop !
Il est toujours cocasse de voir comment les gens n’arrivent pas à se mettre d’accord entre-eux. Je me suis dit qu’il y aurait pu y avoir une sorte de consensus sur la date de la Journée Mondiale du Livre, mais bon, apparemment non.
Donc aujourd’hui, c’est la Grande Bretagne et l’Irlande qui fêtent la Journée Mondiale du Livre et pour les autres, il faudra attendre le 23 Avril et les évènements soutenus par l’UNESCO.
La journée “à l’anglaise” vise à rassembler de l’argent afin d’envoyer des packs de livres aux écoles. Il s’agit en fait d’une des initiatives liées au “2008, Année de la Lecture” du vieux royaume.
Si vous désirez en savoir plus sur la Journée Mondiale du Livre du Royaume-Uni et de l’Irlande (Sic), je vous laisse le site. Sinon, il faudra attendre le 23 Avril pour la Journée sponsorisée par l’UNESCO.
Pour ma part, c’est le jour du livre tous les jours !
